Description

F.H. Dufty photograph of the beach at Levuka with canoes and trading schooners lying just offshore. The man at centre on the beach is carrying an iuli or steering oar. The smaller flanking canoes nearest the beach are camakau (literally “wooden outrigger”) sailing outriggers, the larger two being drua or so-called double canoes, actually a sailing canoe with an outrigger hull or cama which is considerably smaller and of different configuration to the hull, or kata.

He was a chaplain to Queen Victoria, a Canon of Windsor, and tutor and chaperone / companion to the future King George V and his brother Prince Albert Victor from c.1869 until 1882.
