F.H. Dufty photograph of Arthur J.L. Gordon’s sketch of “Nasaucoko and Na Koro Vou [Nakorovou]”, February 1876, which Baron von Hugel has captioned “Fortified town & Camp of armed constabulary (during the war)”, the war being Sir Arthur Gordon’s “Little War” against so-called rebel Vitilevu highlanders in 1876. Ditched and palisaded Nasaucoko, occupied by people of the recently converted Namataku tribe, is in the foreground, with the ditched, banked and palisaded Nakorovou (literally “the new town”) or Armed Native Constabulary camp behind it. The defences of the camp mimic those of a Fijian korowaiwai or ring-ditch fort. Most of the houses are of the ‘beehive’ or conical-roofed, centre-poled type characteristic of western Vitilevu. Nasaucoko lies alongside the Waitabucake tributary of the Tubuniwai or Sigatoka River. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, from record P.100053.VH, JD 10/1/2012]
