Description
Dufty Brothers photograph of Serua Island which lies, Bau-like, just off the coast of Vitilevu - in this case the middle of the south coast. The stone jetty that was built for the governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, in 1876 can be seen jutting out onto what at low tide are mudflats which extend well beyond the end of it. The building with the white-washed walls built of coral cement, and with white cowry shells covering the extended ends of its ridge-pole, may be the church. The vale are more or less lined up in the colonially approved manner, but the village still retains much early character, with some fenced household compounds remaining.
