“Native village near Suva”
A Burton Brothers of Dunedin photograph, photographer Alfred Burton, 1884, taken at Suvavou village on the north shore of Suva harbour, with the Suva peninsula in the background. The colonial capital had removed to Suva in 1882. One of the women has her hair limed. Hull of a velovelo canoe at right, with a roll of gasau (Miscanthus floridulus) fish trap fencing leaning against it. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]
