Description

“Fijian Native Constabulary, Suva, Vitilevu.”. [von Hügel's annotation]

The same group of ovisa or sotia of the Armed Native Constabulary as in P.99730.VH, seated in re-arranged order outside the same house, this time behind two stacks of their new Martini Henry rifles, the stack behind them in P.99730.VH apparently having been deemed to be too shy. Early 1880s - the colonial capital was transferred to Suva in southeast Vitilevu in 1882, and the A.N.C went with it, taking the names of Nasova and Draiba with them - indeed, the Fiji police barracks in Suva are still at Nasova, hard by the grounds of Government House.
See P.99729.VH for details of uniform, thence through to P.99732.VH. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]
