Description

“Fijian Native Constabulary”. [von Hügel's annotation]

A group of ovisa or sotia of the Armed Native Constabulary, including (third from left in back row) the lance corporal featured in P.99729.VH, which can be seen for uniform details. The men are seated behind a stack of Martini-Henry breechloading rifles, which have replaced their old muzzle-loading Enfield and breechloading Snider rifles of the 1876 campaign. At left in the back row, wearing his distinctive tunic, is Ratu Seru, looking slightly older than he did in the parade ground photographs of 1876. Early 1880s.
