On Cech’s list describing prints:
“(Photos 45-135: These were taken while on a two-month tour of duty to the British Agency at Gyantse in Tibet).
100a/b. “Schoolboys at Gobshi 5.8.31”
See gi: Gobshi
The boys are seen displaying their slates covered in writing. These slates (chyang-shing) were nearly always two feet long and ten inches wide. A little bag of podered [powdered] chalk accompanied them. The slate would be washed and dried. Then the chalk bag was rubbed lightly over the board covering it in a thin white film. In this letters were scratched with a stick about a foot long.” [printed text]

Other Information

The transcription of this album by Mark Turin and Sara Shneiderman was carried out with reference to Krystina Cech’s catalogue list alone. Alex Nadin has since revised their cataloguing by systematically matching their records to the images. Margaret Williamson’s handwritten captions for photographs have now been transcribed into the Inscription field, and Cech’s descriptions appear in the Description field. Correct entries for Place, Named Person and Other Nos. have also been entered by Alex Nadin. [Sudeshna Guha 29/10/2002]
