On Mamen's listing: Trip S. from Hailar through Olet country, Barga, Manchuria. 1932.
40. Chaken Sangin sitting on bags. 9/3.
Mamen’s description: “Chaken Jangin sitting on bags.”
Jangin was a Manchu word used as a title for the head governor of a sum (district). There are quite many photos of him as well as his family. In any of them he was looking down even if it is obvious that he knew he was being taken a picture of him. This is a popular custom for the Mongols to avoid direct eye contact with the people who are not familiar or close such as strangers, senior and high ranked people as well as of different sex. [U. Borjigin 27/5/2002]
