Description

On Mamen’s listing: During Shaman performance at Omul Ail, Barga, Manchuria 1931.
14. Khoange [Huangge] Shaman, sitting in front of yurt.”

Huangge (1900-1976 ) was born in the Gobool clan into an aristocratic family which was described as ‘not only the number one among the Daurs of Hulun Buir but among all the Mongols in general.’ She was the most revered of all Daur Shamans of her time(Humphrey with Onon,1996:.188). “Once a year Huangge, the most famous shamaness in Barga, gathers a new spiritual strength at an important ceremony”. This important ceremony should be the “ominan” described in the “Shamans and Elder” ( Humphrey with Onon 1996, p.237). Her dress was more complete and attractive than those of other because she was from a wealthy family. Her head-dress has “six pronged antlers”. Between the antlers, there is a “copper-coloured bird with outstretched wings, which tilt forwards and downwards” ... “many silk cloths and xadaks tied to the antlers, of various colours: white, blue, red and green”. She is wearing a collar on which there are over 85 shells on each side at the front. There are six epaulettes on each side on the collar of which the upper ones are shorter and black, the lower ones are longer and red and all are embroidered. Her main dress is made of tanned skin with a chamois finish. It weighs more than 40lbs. There is a rope of braided skin ending in a long leather tassel. These tassels were clutched by the shamaness during the performance. She is wearing 30 mirrors each side and altogether 60 and many closed mouth typed bells and open type ones. A large tooth (probably boar’s) on each side of the breast of her costume. Two deer and two cranes are embroidered on the rectangular piece at the top of the tail with twelve long and twelve short streamers, and a series of animals is embroidered on the end of the long streamers. The three of the animals which Doctor Lindgren was able to identify correspond to those of the Duodenary Cycle. Her drum is covered with goat skin. The drumstick have a roe-deer skin covering. She has cymbals which were not popular. A large copper cash was hanging from the shoulder of her but Lindgren said she had never seen a necklace of her. [U. Borjigin 10/2/2002]
