Description

Dufty studio portrait of a young Fijian man in gala or dance dress. He has artificial flowers and streamers made from striped and macerated coconut or pandanus leaf in his short hair, holds a war club, and has a trade knife stuck through the fringed white barkcloth wrapping round his upper left arm. At his throat is a white shell pendant on a black band. He wears a dark brown masikuvui barkcloth shoulder sash or iwabale, and wears a brown and white gatuvakatoga barkcloth isulu wrap-around skirt, surmounted by a white barkcloth waist sash. He has a series of ornamental cicatrices on his upper left arm, and a line of what look like pale cicatrice dots running down his left forearm.
