Portrait of a Kai Colo ‘mountaineer’ in an oval vignette.
Head and shoulders studio portrait of an untamed Kai Colo or Vitilevu highlander, obviously close kin to Nabukatavatava of the Koroqaqa - see P.87203 & P.87204. He is wearing a whale ivory saunidaliga ear ornament in the slit and distended lobe of his right ear, and a necklace strung with two rows of white trade beads. Early 1870s. [Fergus Clunie, 26/9/2003]
