Description

“Tanna”. [von Hügel’s? annotation]

An F.H. Dufty carte-de-visite photograph of a bare-breasted Tannese woman with an ornamental comb in her hair, and wearing an unhemmed kilt that might have been torn from an old damask curtain, and a broad canvas belt with an ornate clasp buckle, broad belts being popular with Melanesian labourers imported from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to work on the Fiji plantations from the 1860s onwards.
