Description

“Samoa”. [von Hügel’s? annotation]

F.H. Dufty carte-de-visite studio photograph of a Samoan woman whose long, oiled and tied back hair is held at the back of her head in a hairnet, and who wears long pendant ear-drops, a cloth band round the neck, and a locket on a chain. She is otherwise dressed in a be-ribboned, just on-the-shoulder pleated bodice with short puffed sleeves - the exact equivalent of a Fijian vinivoa bodice - and an elaborately tasselled and fringed wrap-around skirt. What appears to be fringed and streamered striped pandanus leaf waistband is largely obscured.
Circa 1875-1876. [Fergus Clunie, 26/7/2003]
