P.87235.VH

Description

F.H Dufty carte de visite studio photograph of a Rotuman woman, with her long hair oiled and ringleted in European or American fashion of the ?1860s, with metal locket attached to a dark cloth band at her throat and wearing a striped blouse with elbow length sleeves that is nothing like the off-the-shoulder Fijian vinivoa bodice, being buttoned at the throat, and a striped skirt. Her Westernised dress and appearance suggest she may have been married to a European.
Early to mid 1870s. See P.87244.VH for others of what may be the same family. [Fergus Clunie, 26/7/2003]
