Description
On catalogue card: “Burial place near the Budda ... [illegible, possibly River] from a sketch by Capt. Sturt.”
Aboriginal burial tomb situated in a grove near the Budda River. The tomb is a smooth half-spherical mound within a ditch and circular area of trampled earth with a path leading into the foreground. Around the tomb are three large tree trunks (probably Eucalyptus trees), which each have had a large band of bark removed. An Aboriginal man sits by a fire with his spear upright in the ground next to him in the foreground. [WV 5/5/2009]

Biographical Information: CHARLES STURT (1795-1869), explorer, soldier and public servant, was born on 28 April 1795 in India. In 1828 Sturt, with his native-born assistant Hamilton Hume, began his expedition to trace the course of the Macquarie River. During this expedition he discovered and named the Darling River. “The Darling River had offered a new challenge and Sturt soon sought permission to lead another expedition to trace the Darling to its assumed outlet in the inland sea. However, it was decided instead that he should investigate the Lachlan-Murrumbidgee river system discovered by Oxley and proceed to the Darling only if the Murrumbidgee proved impassable. On 3 November 1829 the second expedition left Sydney”
Sturt published two accounts of his expeditions:
Two expeditions into the interior of southern Australia : during the years 1828,1829,1830, and 1831 : with observations on the soil, climate, and general resources of the colony of New South Wales / By Capt. Charles Sturt.
