Description

On Catalogue Card for duplicate print P.290.ACH1: “Burning of a dead.”

The smoking of a deceased person at the southern tip of Australia. The dead are wrapped in bast and hung between two trees. There is one person on the left attending the pyre while three women stand or sit behind probably in mourning. Two men on the right bring firewood to the pyre. In the foreground on the right is a grasstree (Xanthorrhoea Arborea). [JD 23/8/2007] [WV 7/4/2009]
