Description

Musical instruments. The drum has a label attached to it and is numbered "E.1887.75." [manuscript in ink]

On display case label for E 1887.75:
"Sami Drum.
Exact provenance uncertain, but probably from the Lule Sami area. The drum is made from pine wood (from near tree root), reindeer skin (sisti), and sinew thread. The paint used was made from alder tree bark. The drum is divided into two realms, our world, and the other world. Note the reindeer coral, lawu (tent) and humanoid figures in the lower half of the skin. Amongst the figures in the upper half are the sun and three supernatural beings."
