Description

Pen and ink drawing of a four Evenki objects collected by Ethel Lindgren during her Northwest Manchuria expedition, 1931 - 1932.

On the left is a Oräwun (Shaman's wapiti or elk call), now in the care of MAA, reference 1937.813, and described as: "'Call used by hunters to imitate wapiti + elk males in rutting season.'
Manchuria; Barga River
Evenki [Reindeer Tungus]
Collected by Dr Ethel John Lindgren in 1929 in northern Barga. Gift from Kaigordov, Cossack trader of Chu-êrh-kan-hê, Barqa.
Note by Lindgren on catalogue card for 1937.813: 'Used to imitate male wapiti & elk in the rutting season. When the stag or elk bull approaches believing it to be a rival, the hunter rubs the call against a tree to imitate the rubbing of antlers, then when the animals close wrongly shoots. The 'call' is made to emit two notes, & a rising 'glide' between the two, by a sharp inhaling of the breath at the mouthpiece, when it is desired to call a wapiti; while by 'talking' into the wider end it is said to be possible to 'call' an elk. The drawings are said to indicate that the 'call' has been successful in leading to the killing of a wapiti, the date indicating the occasion. Further, a shaman usually decorates all his possessions, & this call belonged to one.'
1937.813 is depicted on a drawing by A. C. Himus (D.78587.LIN)."

The Urkuwun on the right is now in the care of MAA, reference 1935.803, and described as "Spoon of light wood, used for stirring dough, used with 1935.802.
Manchuria; Upper Bystraya River
Evenki [Reindeer Tungus]
Meant to be used with 1935.802. According to the catalogue card for 1935.803, 'There is a hole for this in the lid of the dough-container, 35.802'."
