Documentary photograph of the 'Mammoth of La Madeleine', an Upper Paleolithic engraving on a fragment of a mammoth tusk.
The tusk was found in five broken pieces in 1864 by workmen for researchers Lartet and Christy at the La Madeleine rock shelter in France. [JD 21/01/2026]

LS.75472.MCBUR to LS.75483.MCBUR were found inside the wooden slide box now numbered C353/.
The box in which these lantern slides are found originally contained slides of Ivor Evans from Malaysia.

Place: The Place field was previously recorded as being "Europe; Spain; La Madelaine", but La Madelaine is a well-known rock shelter located in the Vézère valley, Dordogne, France. In 1864 Edouard Larter discovered a woolly mammoth depiction of a fragment of mammoth tusk at La Madeleine. The Place field has been amended accordingly.
