P.70818.ACH2 to P.70848.ACH2 were found inside the envelope now numbered C309/4/3/ which came from drawer 4 of the entire cabinet formerly numbered as batch 153, now re-numbered C309/.

Place: The Place field was previously recorded as being “Oceania; Melanesia”, but the print is annotated as ‘Tokelau, or Line Island’. Tokelau consists of three atolls north of Samoa. Line Islands is an island grouping belonging to Kiribati. The Place field has been amended accordingly. [Source: MSN Mappoint, JD 7/5/2010]

Photographer: This print was provisionally attributed to “?Dufty Brothers, Levuka”. This is consistent with the style and the wooden chair used in the image. The Photographer and Place fields have been amended accordingly. [JD 28/3/2012]

Context: The woman is annotated as ‘Tokolau’, loosely meaning what are now Tuvualu and Kiribati woman. “Tokelau” labourers were imported for the Fiji plantations, and Tokelau women, with their less melanesoid features, being favoured as planters’ and traders’ wives or mistresses.
