Description

A man chopping at a tree with a stone axe. The man is smiling broadly, suggesting that he is performing for the camera, possibly to illustrate how stone adzes were used in the past [Andrew Moutu 20/02/04]

P. K. Townsend (1971:19) reports that direct European contact came relatively late to this region, with the first Australian patrol in 1961. She suggests that traditional tools such as stone adzes were still very much in use: "In 1966-67 the first few young men to go outside the location to work were just returning; missions had not yet entered the area. Trade goods such as clothing, steel axes, knives and fishhooks, which had been introduced by native trade routes, were as yet in short supply.". [Mark Elliott 05/03/04]
