Description

A masquerade play in Lagos. The masqueraders are wearing costumes which consist of cloths covering the face, cloths over the body and cotton trousers. They are wearing dark hats with white appliquéd designs around the brim, and some are holding sticks. There are male attendants and spectators amongst the masqueraders.

P.61128.GIJ to P.61278.GIJ were kept in box 13, now numbered C294/.

The inscription on the box as well as a descriptive list of slides pasted on the inside lid of the box indicates that it originally contained lantern slides from Dovecote and belonged to J.H.Bullock. However, at the time of cataloguing, lantern slides belonging to G.I. Jones were found inside it.

Context: GI Jones photographed a masquerade in Lagos in the 1930s. He did not record what the name of the play was or what it was about. There are no written documents pertaining to this play.
