P.56836 to P.56849 were found in an envelope now numbered C268/1/1/1/ which was inside the brown envelope C268/1/1/. The latter contained prints P.56850 to P.56871.
C268/1/1/ was found inside the first drawer of the green cabinet, now numbered C268/1/, C268/ being the new number given to the entire cabinet which was formerly numbered as batch 144.

Bibliographical Reference: The source date is mentioned in the Museum’s Annual Reports,1905 p. 21, with the following entry:
“V. Photographs, Prints and Drawings.
Ethnological.
1338. Thirty-five photographs (6” x 4.5” and smaller) of the natives of Bopoto, Congo Free State. Taken by the donor, the Rev. Kenred Smith.” [JD 2/6/2009]
Source: Although Kenred Smith is named on the envelope C268/1/1/1/:, seven of the prints P.56841 - P.56844 and P.56846 - P.56848 are annotated on the reverse as being purchased in 1906. This may relate to the entry in the Annual Report, 1907, p.20 with the following entry:
“V. Photographs, Prints and Drawings.
933. Forty-five photographs (4’.5 x 3”.5 and smaller), of African natives (North of the Zambesi). Purchased.”
The image content is consistent with this. [JD 2/6/2009]
Place: The Place field was previously recorded as being “Africa; North East Africa; South Bantu; Africa; North East Africa; Southern Ethiopia”, but the print is inscribed with “S. Bantu.” The Place field has been amended accordingly. [JD 2/6/2009]
