Description

Three-quarter studio portrait of a standing Berber man with a full beard down to his chest and is missing one of his front teeth.
The man is wearing a dark coloured cap with a pale trim and white disks. This cap has long lengths of cord of irregular lengths attached to the crown which fall over the man’s shoulders. One longer piece of cord has a circular white disk attached to it. Further back on the top of the cap there is a silver coloured fan shaped ornament attached, which is decorated with raised circles.
He is also wearing a dark coloured loose tunic over all of his other clothes. This tunic has a slit down the front which has been sewed up, apart from a section about half way down which shows his white underclothes. On his right hand side of the garment there are several parallel lines where the tunic has been re-sewn. There is also a large tear on his right hand side sleeve, which has been partially sewn up with white thread. His right hand is raised above his head, and he is holding an object which appears to be made out of two joined circular objects. His left arm and hand cannot be seen.
The painted backdrop is faint, but has a square topped plinth on the left of the photo and foliage on the right hand side.
