Description

A close-up shot of the three amulets used to ward off illness and animals and attached to the neck ornament in P.50773.RDG.
The amulet on the left is a crescent shape and is attached to the band of the neck ornament by two loops of plaited twine. It has a hole pierced through the middle and appears to be made of snakeskin.
The amulet in the centre is a circular woven cane with a hole in the centre, and is attached to the band of the neck ornament by a thin plaited loop which is worked into the main body of the amulet.
The amulet on the right is a tooth, pierced across the base and attached to the band of the neck ornament by two thin plaited loops.

“B: Amulet to ward off illness and animals. It consists of a tooth, pierced across base, a small section of cane, and a small cylinder of wood encased in skin and perforated laterally, the three strung on a loop of thin plaited fibre.
NB. Pencil note added to catalogue card: “Apparently illustrated on page 330 fig.51 Baganda”.”
