Description

An open-air pre-circumcision procession at the mouth of the Pattani River. Several adolescent males, with shaven heads, are borne on the shoulders of men and sheltered by umbrellas.
In front of the youths are two men carrying probably a betel-leaf stand on their shoulders, sheltered by a parasol. At the front are women dressed in kebaya (long fitted garments), holding aloft ritual items, probably orange, white and purple rice cakes, called "the soul rice", and "make-believe krisses" (Skeat 1901, p. 180).
