From right to left: Haddon, cross-legged wearing trousers, shirt and boots; Pasi standing with a hand on Haddon and Ray’s shoulder wearing shirt, trousers and hat; Ray kneeling with trousers, jacket, pith helmet. This negative was kept in an envelope marked C49/17/ by the cataloguer. The envelope was kept in box marked C49/ by the cataloguer. The envelope is now re-housed in Neg. Env. Box 9 which is stored in Storage Box B in the Photo Archive room.

Publication: Many of the photographs with “C.U. Anth. Ex. T. Sts.” on the catalogue card appear in the Reports for the Cambridge University Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Straits, 1898 to 1899, published 1901 to 1935.

Related Archive: Haddon recorded this photograph in his journal: “In the afternoon we [Haddon, Ray, Seligman] partook of native refreshmant - a woman “Mrs Canoe” had laid out some banana leaves on the sand in an enclosure round a house on which she had placed 4 heaps of coconut chips (shavings of the kernal) + a central heap of warm roasted green bananas - + 4 green coconuts were prepared for drinking from - I enclose a photo of this al fresco repast” (Haddon 1898: 70).

“Alfred Haddon and Sydney Ray with Pasi and family on a beach at Dauar. Haddon first met Pasi in 1888 and renewed their friendship when he returned as leader of the 1898 Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait. Photographs played an important role in the interaction between the Expedition members and Islanders: lantern-slide shows were popular local entertainment, photographs were given as gifts to assistants and sometimes taken at Islanders’ request.” [Sudeshna Guha 27/11/02]

MAA Exhibition: This photograph was included in the Fieldwork & Collecting text panel for the 'Introduction Case', in the Maudslay Gallery during its re-display, May 2012, with the caption:
"Haddon and Ray having a picnic with Pasi and extended family on Dauar., Torres Strait. Pasi, Haddon’s main assistant and friend, stands between Haddon and Ray touching their shoulders. Dadi sits in front of her husband, Canoe, and has laid out coconut chips, roasted bananas and green coconuts on banana leaves.
