Context: This lantern slide image is produced from a photograph taken during excavations of the Sutton Hoo ship burial site in 1939, directed by C.W. Phillips. The lantern slide may have been made at that time or at a later date.

Publication: This image was used as Plate XXXVa in Phillips 1940a, with the caption: "a. Thole". See Bibliography.

Paul Ashbee ordered and catalogued these lantern slides in 1998. This lantern slide was kept in container marked C35/ by the cataloguer. This container holds a series of images from Sutton Hoo. The numbering system referred to in the "Other no’s" field was given by Ashbee, and his description is transcribed in the "Description" field.
