Context: "I was anxious to visit the Ripon Falls to see what progress had been made and to find whether any steps had been taken to make use of this great flow of water for the production of power of any purpose. I only noticed two changes in all the years I had been there last. One was that a telegraph line had been had been carried over the Victoria Nile below the falls, and the other that the path leading down to the falls was very worn and had become a favourite evening walk, especially among the Indians, who played their card games as they sat on the rocks. In other respects everything seemed the same, and no attempt appeared to have been made to utilise the water power. Below the Ripon Falls, there is a series of smaller rapids, now known as the Owen falls, which surpass in the beauty of their scenery even the better known Ripon Falls” (Roscoe, J., 1922. The Soul of Central Africa: An Account of the Mackie Ethnological Expedition. (London: Cassell and Co.), p. 293.). [ED 30/10/2007]
