Description

A wooden panel face mask; the face depicts rounded ears, almond shaped eyes, nose and mouth and along the chin is a pointed tooth-like decoration; the top of the head is incised representing hair and a hat?. There are holes in the panel which indicate it was attached to something.

This negative was kept in a film storage album labelled “IBIBIO & OKWU WALL” by G. I. Jones, and numbered “C12/” by the cataloguer.

Publication: A similar Ibibio mask is shown in plate 85 in Jones, 1984, p. 177)

Context:
The Ibibio style was only one of a number of styles found in the Anang area. I have called it Anang (Ibibio). “It was in [the Anang area] that Eastern Nigerian face masks attained their greatest development... They could be carved on circular or on rectangular panels (Fig. 85)...” (Jones, pp. 175, 177).
