Description

A Tiv pottery head featuring a humanised appearance. The eyes are incised and there are scarification marks on the side of the face, an elongated nose, lips, a protruding chin, and ears. The head is incised with a raised and elaborate hairstyle resembling plaits.

The Pitt River’s Museum label is visible in the photograph, noting "Pottery head in which a spirit may dwell. Tiv Benue Province, N. Nigeria. d.d. Capt. R. M. Downes, 1933."

Physical Condition: Brittle, yellowing negative. Gelatin emulsion scratched.
