Context: Pithecanthropus erectus (or Java Man) was the classification originally given by Dutch anatomist and geologist Eugène Dubois to his discovery of the first known fossils of the species Homo erectus. The first skullcap and thighbone were excavated in October 1891 at Trinil - Ngawi Regency on the banks of the Solo River in East Java, Indonesia. A more complete skeleton was later found at Sangiran, Central Java, 18 km to the north of Solo. [Source: Brittanica Encyclopedia Online, JD 2/11/2009]
