Biographical Information: Joaquin Augusto Gonsalves immigrated to Honolulu from Madeira as a twenty year old man in 1879, where he set up a photographic studio. Prior to this he had been an apprentice to the photographer J.J. Williams working in a Portuguese newspaper office.
