Place: The Place field was previously recorded as being “Europe; ?England”, but J. Gonsalves worked in Hawaii (see following note). The Place field has been amended accordingly. [JD 27/10/2008]

Photographer: Joaquin Augusto Gonsalves immigrated to Honolulu from Madeira as a twenty year old man in 1879, where he set up a photographic studio. Prior to this he had been an apprentice to the photographer J.J. Williams working in a Portuguese newspaper office.
