26. 24. A typical sailing canoe of the D'Entecasteaux rig.
The platform on the outrigger is as long as the body of the canoe. The breakwater, bodawa, is characterised by a conventionalised human figure or figures in the centre of its upper margin (see case 36). The end-erection vagavaga, is a rather small more or less semi-circular board the motive of which is a bird's head (see case 36). The mast is eccentric and carries a triangular sail.
This type of canoe has recently become the common form in the Trobriands where it is termed masawa. The photograph is that of a Trobrainds masawa." [JD 28/08/2018]
