Related Archive: In Kathleen Haddon's unpublished manuscript 'An English Girl in New Guinea', 1914, p.47, for Monday 5th October, is the following extract:
“At seven the tide turned and we were baffled and we had to run up the Buniki river for shelter as the engine was not working well and could not beat the tide and wind. Mr Beach decided to spend the day overhauling the engine and hoped to get off the following day, so we anchored opposite some huts and sat down to await events. The Buniki River is quite a small one; I believe that no white man except Mr Beach and the magistrates had ever visited it, and the natives are very wild."
On pp.52 - 53, for Wednesday 7th October, is the following extract:
"At sunrise we were opposite the mouth of the River Gama, and there we stuck for some time in the tide race, rolling heavily and wrestling with our breakfast ...
Our progress round Bell Point was incredibly slow, but we finally turned it, hoisted our sail, and took departure for Goaribari Island. ... At noon we were near Goaribari Island ." [JD 13/1/2015]
