“A short way up the river lies the village of Waradirio which we visited, as we had all the rest of the day to spare. The Bamu River is a very remote spot, seldom visited by white people; certainly there were no others there during our stay, and none of the villages had ever been visited by a white woman before. The approach to Waradirio is unpleasantly muddy even at high tide, and unfortunately the tide was low when we arrived. I was sent ashore in the dinghy, and transshipped from that into a canoe which was pulled along by several natives over their knees in mud. On reaching the bank a rough causeway led to the village, but this had an unfortunate habit of disappearing in critical places, so that we arrived, finally, with our shoes caked in mud."
