“I went with him [Haddon] to collect string figures and to be his photographer.”
Related Archive: In Kathleen Haddon's unpublished manuscript 'An English Girl in New Guinea', 1914, pp. 25-26 is the following extract:
“As my father was making a special study of canoes, we went out into the village and made notes on those that we saw and photographed them. Mawatta is situated at the mouth of the river, so the people need two sorts, for river and sea work respectively. The river canoes are simply hollowed-out logs and are very wobbly concerns; but the sea-going craft are much more solidly built and are steadied by having an outrigger on either side. The outriggers consist of two transverse booms and a heavy float, which lies in the water and is attached to the ends of the booms by means of several small sticks, but the method of attachment varies considerably in different localities."
