Description
On Catalogue Card: “Framework of a Bella Coola house viewed from the rear. When in use planks would have covered the space between the two frontal posts, and auxiliary posts, erected outside the side lines of the house (as now shown) would have supported the side walls and the roof boards. The cross rafters in the centre of the house (one of which can be plainly seen) are called ‘qapai’, the name given to the Humpback salmon, from their similar shape. The spool-like projections on the front posts on which rest the planks, are only used on the houses of one family, the right to do so being a prerogative. May, 1922.” [typed text]
