Place: The Place field was previously recorded as being “NE Africa; Sudan; near Bor”, but South Sudan, where Bor is located, gained political independence from Sudan in 2011. The Place field has been amended accordingly. [JD 08/01/2017 ]

CUMAA Exhibition: A reproduction of this image was displayed in Collected Sights in the section Africa with the descriptive label:
“Dinka blacksmiths with bellows. In their book Pagan Tribes of the Nilotic Sudan, the Seligmans mentioned that in ‘1910, the demand for iron so far exceeded the supply that a couple of hundred-weight of scrap-iron proved excellent trade’. Charles and Brenda Seligman acquired many photographs from resident colonial officers and from their former student, Professor Evans-Prichard.” [Sudeshna Guha 26/11/02]
