On Catalogue Card: “House at Mer.”

View looking up at a thatch house with woven coconut leaf walls, and a roof finial in the shape of a figure. The front has an overhanging roof shading a bamboo verandah. The house is built on a slope on which is planted bananas and tobacco. [Jude Philp 17/3/1999, updated JD 25/7/2011]

Publication: The figure on this roof top (P.809.ACH1) is printed in Reports IV: Plate XII: 3 with the caption “Finial of a Mirian [sic] house, Mer (pp. 101, 109). Wilkin studied house construction in Torres Strait but died before the Reports were printed, his work was postumously edited by Haddon and appears in Volume IV. [Jude Philp 17/3/1999]
