Description
On Catalogue Card: “Huts on ground, Tud.”
Two thatched huts built by Yam Islanders for shelter while tending their gardens on Tudu. The huts are constructed with the eaves resting on the ground to form a triangular shape and open at one end with an upright stick supporting a central ridge pole. In the foreground a bamboo pole is supported horizontally on two forked branches and behind the huts are coconut palms and trees. [JD 16/5/2011]

Related Archive: Haddon writes in his 1898 journal, “Tuesday Oct. 24. We made an early start and anchored off Tutu (Warrior I.) in the forenoon as I wanted to go over the old religious sites with Maino once more. No one lives on the island now and the old sites are overgrown with bush and most of the old stones are removed or broken up ... The Yam people occasionally go across to look after their gardens & we photographed the simple huts they had erected & which we were informed were like the old houses.” [JD 16/5/2011]
