Context (Field collection)
Collected by Kathleen Nawoyski (1917-2015) between 1950 and 1952, when she and her husband, Roman Zladislaw Nawoyski were in Belize whilst he worked as a civil engineer. According to her handwritten reminiscences (see scan in Doc.612), 'it was in this area [Orange Walk village] that 2 ancient sites were excavated by the bull dozers. The artifacts were handed over in Belize and some went to the Brit. Museum but Roman [Nawoyski, her husband] kept two momentos... the axehead from the stone age [2025.3] and a thonged foot from the ancient Mayan Indian civilization [T 2024.1]. How I wished the find had been made the day I was there.' See archive (Doc.612) for related material from the Nawoyskis' time in Belize.
