Haliotis (abalone) shell ornament or pendant. Rectangular section of shell with two drilled perforations along one of the short edges; natural iridescent surface on one side, brown to black colouration on the other. Chips missing from the perforated edge.

In Central California the archaeological sequence after c 3000 BC is best known from burials sited on natural mounds. Substinence was based on hunting and collections of seeds and nuts. The function of the characteristic ‘charmstone’ is not known.’

Context (Amendments / updates)
The exchange list (Doc.576) gave the collection date as 1937, but this is likely to be a typo. Although the Hearst Museum catalogue record for L-15749 does not give the collection date (apart from before 1942), this typo has been regularly found in the exchange list for the Johnson Mound and for those listed as being collected by Henry Gibbs, etc. the collection date has been 1931. This has been incorporated into the Field Collection information.
