Description (Physical description)
Description for 1931.343 [A-B]: 'Sword with flat blade, round tip. Tang of square section. Small bronze guard hardly wider than the base of the blade. Three figures of animals, possibly pigs, are stamped into the blade near the base, 1 on one side, 2 on the other. Also 2 casts in plaster and 2 casts in metal showing the animals in detail.'

Context (Analysis)
Catalogue card contains the following entries: "(This is the type of sword found in the Pagan Anglo Saxon graves, and no doubt belongs to that period.)". At the end of this sentence a swastika is drawn. Also: "IAN STEAD (Brit.Mus.) says definitely Iron Age - 1984", and: "More likely Iron Age. It is made in 2 bits and the base of the hilt is of an Iron Age type." This last sentence is crossed out. Then: "?No. Saxon. celt" . See reverse of card for photograph.
