Handwritten note with object reading in pencil: 'Burial. 173. Textile. This seems originally to have been a bundle of material possibly distorted during excavation and certainly during transit. As far as could be seen the finger was wrapped in cloth along with the maize-cob this was again wrapped in matting and the whole with the piece of wood laid on or in a coarse basket. There are traces of more skin and meat than can be accounted for by the presence of the remains of one finger so presumably this group may represent part of a hand which was wrapped up just under the skin of the corpse - as was the case with burial 198.'
