Context (Analysis)
In his 1937 publication, R.T. Gunther dates this weight to Henry VIII's reign, which tallies with an archive list of weights and measures in MAA's collection (MM1/2/8). However, a typescript list of objects previously on loan to the 1936 Whipple exhibition has modified this dating to read 'Henry VII', which in turn tallies with the later addition to the 1886 Accession Register recording their 1939 loan to the Science Museum. Therefore, at present, it is not certain whether this weight dates to the reign of Henry VII or Henry VIII.
