Accession No

Description
Forgery of an antique figurine, likely made from dark-grey stone, possibly slate. Carved from a rectangular block. Rounded head, with flat top and front including incised facial features and two curved incisions at back, possibly suggesting locks of hair. Constriction beneath head to suggest neck. The rest of the figure is represented only by a long rectangular pedestal base, chamfered along two edges. Almost like a herm. Roughly inscribed along the flat sides of this base: 'OFTE THE WORKMAN A/ND THE PARSON LIED'. Scratch along back.

Context (Analysis)
It is unclear to which period this forgery was intended to belong. In 2025, it was found stored with objects produced in the nineteenth century. This date and accordingly the 'Post Medieval' period have therefore tentatively been added to the Period field along with '?Modern' as a 'best guess'. More research is needed.
