Description

Shadwell forgery (commonly known as a 'Billy and Charley') of a badge or medallion made from copper alloy. Disc-shaped with decoration in relief. One face shows the crowned frontal head of a king with beard and long hair, surrounded by an unintelligible inscription; the other depicts a bird, its wings spread wide, with a key beneath one foot and perhaps an orb beneath the other. This too is surrounded by unintelligible text, with an additional date of '1121' written in Arabic numerals at top. Hanging loop above disc is formed from four conjoined rounded and semicircular sections decorated with ridges. Mould-made.
