Description
Bichrome stirrup spouted vessel, reconstructed from two sherds, in the form of a frog; consisting of upright cylindrical rim, mouth sitting at an angle on the stirrup; stirrup handle sitting along the back of frog shaped body. The frog is depicted with large lenticular eyes with slight brow ridge and small rounded ears; nose is flat and connects directly to upper lip; pointed wide mouth with incised line separating lips; back and front legs folded; back of body with ridged shape. Body largely covered in white slip; areas of red slip along back and at back of body; applied red decoration on eyes, ears and for lines along nose and around mouth; sides of face with red curvilinear lines. Material orange in colour with gritty temper.

Collected by Arthur Edwin Macandrew during the 30 years he lived in Peru, where he was the manager of a sugar plantation. He donated his collection to the Colchester Museum in July 1931; the collection was subsequently transferred to MAA in 1947.
